Platform Deployments

Six Great Horned Owl platforms were installed throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel on Saturday, January 24th by our volunteer crew.

Full details can be found on the new Platforms page.

Five or six further owl platforms will be scheduled for our next deployment most likely late spring 2026 as we spread our wings further afield in the Monterey Peninsula including Carmel Views, Carmel Knolls, Rancho Rio Vista, Carmel Highlands, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove & Monterey. Please note that Carmel-by-the-Sea is now completely full of owl platforms.

Great Horned Owl Territorial Boundaries

There are varying estimates of territorial boundaries for Great Horned Owls which typically depend on the availability of food (rodents).

Due to the dense population of rats in the Monterey Peninsula Carmel Owls aims for 1/2 mile platform spacings which is approximately 1 square mile of territory.

Ideally, there’s a need for a doctoral candidate of ornithology, or more specifically strigiology (a sub-discipline focusing on owls), to complete a thesis on this issue.
