Great Horned Owl platform installations in the Monterey Peninsula cover many cities, including Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel, Carmel Views, Carmel Valley, Carmel Highlands, High Meadows, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove and Monterey. Please note that Carmel-by-the-Sea is now fully populated with owl platforms.
Great Horned Owl Territorial Boundaries
There are varying estimates of territorial boundaries for Great
Horned Owls, which typically depend on the availability of food (rodents).
Due to the dense population of rats in/on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Owls aims for 4/5 mile platform spacing, which is approximately 340 acres of territory.
Ideally, there’s a need for a doctoral candidate of ornithology, or more specifically, strigiology (a sub-discipline focusing on owls), to complete a thesis on this issue.
