Great Horned Owls & Owl Pics
The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is one of North America’s most widespread and formidable birds of prey. Recognizable by its prominent feather tufts—often mistaken for “horns”—this powerful raptor is renowned for its nearly silent flight and exceptional hunting ability, preying on a wide range of rats, mice, and other rodents.
Equipped with remarkable night vision and acute hearing, the Great Horned Owl can detect and capture prey in near-total darkness. Its flexible neck allows it to rotate its head up to 270 degrees, giving it an extraordinary field of view. The species is also famous for its deep, resonant “hoo-HOO” call, a haunting sound commonly used to establish and defend territory.
