Carmel Owls Strategically Deploys Six Great Horned Owl Platforms to Enhance Ecosystem Health

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, CA – Carmel Owls, a leading conservation initiative dedicated to sustainable pest management and avian advocacy, is proud to announce the successful deployment of six owl nesting platforms designed specifically for the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus).

These strategic installations mark a significant milestone in the volunteer organization's mission to integrate natural predatory cycles into local land management. By providing stable, elevated nesting sites, Carmel Owls aims to bolster the local Great Horned Owl population, offering a chemical-free solution to rodent control for residents and downtown commercial partners alike.

Restoring Balance through "Nature’s Pest Control"

Great Horned Owls are apex predators that play a critical role in maintaining ecological equilibrium. However, a lack of suitable nesting sites in the Carmel area and the Monterey Peninsula often limits their presence.

The new platforms, engineered for durability, offer several key benefits:

  • Natural Rodent Mitigation: A mating pair of owls with fledglings can consume seven rodents every night, reducing the need for harmful anticoagulant rodenticides.

  • Structural Integrity: The sturdy redwood platforms are built to withstand coastal winds and heavy weather, ensuring long-term habitat stability.

  • Biodiversity Support: Increasing the raptor presence helps stabilize the local food web and promotes a healthier environment for indigenous flora and fauna.

A Commitment to Sustainable Solutions

"The deployment of these six owl platforms is more than just a backyard project; it’s a commitment to a toxin-free future for our community," said Paul Falworth, Chief Owl Officer and volunteer organizer of Carmel Owls. "By inviting these magnificent Great Horned Owls back into our landscape, we are choosing biological solutions over chemical ones."

The project was made possible through local collaboration with their Adopt an Owl Platform initiative and subsequent data-driven site selection to ensure territorial spacing.
